The R&D focuses on consolidating and growing our position in our targeted markets segments by developing and commercialising packaging and speciality paper products, energy opportunities from sustainable renewable resources, developing new products and optimising our forestry assets.

 

Our technology centres across the world cover a diverse spread of research and development. In this role you will be working at the Research and development department in Gratkorn, Austria. This centre covers new Technology Development Centre,  Nanocellulose Competence Centre and Papermaking processes

 

 

Role and responsibilities:

  

  • Responsible for all legal requirements of the R&D center which operates under Sappi Papier Holding GmbH
  • Responsible for the Safety, Risk and health management systems – the incumbent needs the skills to manage this responsibility
  • Manage the technology portfolio pipeline of the R&D location Gratkorn competence centers in alignment with the Director R&D and in support of the Sappi strategy
  • Liaise with Universities an institutions to promote a collaborative working relationship (not responsible for the work programs but relationship management)
  • Be abreast of EU R&D funding mechanisms and identify opportunities to secure funding of projects as available  
  • Preparations of annual budgets and resource planning
  • Line manager of the employees in R&D location Gratkorn, including management of engagement plans and development of the team, drive open communication and promote engagement within a multi-culture team environment, manage a succession pipeline via the development plans to allow employees opportunities to grow in functional and organizational skills  
  • Manage maintenance and upkeep of the buildings, laboratories and equipment
  • Ensuring that research and design methodologies meet established scientific and technical standards
  • Develop a resource plan in terms of skills, capacity, equipment, and services to deliver the annual KPI’s, ability to report technical and non-technical updates to line manager and relevant fora
  • Offer an analytical service to mills and R&D competence centers  
  • Monitor R&D activities and optimize the productivity of the center to ensure delivery of tasks and projects on time and in full as agreed with the internal customer
  • Develop an agile environment where teamwork and One Sappi principles deliver results with speed
  • Collaborate with the HR, communication, procurement, IT, IP and finance departments to achieve the departmental deliverables and KPI’s
  • Promotes collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, promote external collaboration to accelerate project delivery where Sappi may lack competencies
  • Responsible for reporting technical and non-technical updates to R&D EU Director, competencies expected in aligning with line manager and translate strategy and decisions into R&D portfolio

 

 

Required qualifications:

 

  • PhD or Masters level in Chemical Engineering / Process Technology (University / University of applied sciences)
  • Minimum of 5 years management experience in a technology environment (Management development program will be advantageous)
  • Experience in field of papermaking (fibre, pulping and coating technology) is required
  • Experience in field of label technology
  • Business acumen coupled with out of the box thinking, networking capabilities and team player
  • Willingness to travel and work cross functional
  • Fluent German and English mandatory

Traveling:
