Sappi Somerset is among the largest paper mills in North America, producing over 970,000 metric tons of graphics and board paper and 530,000 metric tons of pulp each year. The mill began as a greenfield pulp mill in 1976, supplying fiber for Scott paper tissue mills.  The first of three state-of-the-art coated paper machines was installed in 1982, with subsequent machines installed in 1986 and 1990.  Significant reinvestments over the years has maintained Somerset's edge on technology and also to branch out from traditional graphic paper into SBS board grades with the rebuild of PM1 in 2018.  The mill can also produce market pulp based on fiber balance, and continues to push for world class status in the realms of safety, quality, and productivity.


Position (job title):  Health & Safety Manager 

Work Site:  Mill Somerset 



Provide leadership and direction in developing, managing, coordinating and implementing effective Health and Safety programs and processes for the Somerset Mill.  This is accomplished by effectively leading the Health and Safety Team; providing guidance to the operating and maintenance departments to ensure compliance with all Company and regulatory standards; championing and leading project planning and specific projects to deliver continuous improvement in mill safety and health performance.  



  • Sustain existing safety processes and implement new or improved safety program elements that contribute to a safe workplace and the prevention of injuries;
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of fire protection and emergency response procedures;
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with all levels of the organization and external government agencies (ie. ME - OSHA);
  • Identify and implement proactive initiatives which support collaboration, employee involvement/participation and continuous improvement;
  • Approve safe design or selection of new or replacement equipment or facilities;
  • Assist production and maintenance management in addressing employee safety concerns;
  • Ensure site security staff employees fulfill their roles and responsibilities as identified in the Sappi Somerset security contract;
  • Provide on-call and/or shift coverage as needed.


Minimum Education, Special Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Safety and Health with a minimum of 5 years of experience in related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • A true passion for safety and health with a focus on employee involvement and continuous improvement.
  • Proven change management skills.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) as well as basic computer skills.
  • Solid foundation in best practices in safety management.
  • Familiar in working with an OHSAS or ISO Management System.
  • Data driven decision-making.
  • Ability to teach and lead others into action.
  • Strong interpersonal skills (ie. listening, responding to criticism).
  • Performance management – set expectations, measure / observe performance and provide feedback.
  • Formal training or acquired knowledge in Federal, State, Local Safety and Health & Security regulations.  
  • Basic understanding of working with organized labor.
