Machinist Journeyman

Sappi is a global leader in sustainable wood fiber products, committed to safety, continuous improvement, and operational excellence. Our Somerset Mill in Skowhegan is one of the most advanced paper manufacturing facilities in the world. We are seeking a skilled Machinist Journeyman to join our Maintenance team and support critical mill operations.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform precision machining using manual and CNC equipment, including milling, turning, drilling, and grinding.
  • Fabricate and repair components to exact specifications using machining, welding, and finishing techniques.
  • Inspect completed workpieces to ensure they meet required tolerances and quality standards.
  • Rebuild, repair, and troubleshoot rotating equipment and gearboxes.
  • Support maintenance activities by producing custom parts and assisting with equipment overhauls.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Safely operate cranes and rigging equipment for lifting, positioning, and assembly tasks.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records of repairs, fabrication, and maintenance work.
  • Follow all safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and mill standards at all times.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a 4-year machinist apprenticeship OR equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in an industrial machine shop environment
  • Extensive welding and fabrication experience
  • Experience with gearbox rebuilds and rotating equipment
  • Crane and rigging experience with safe lifting practices
  • Strong ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and schematics
  • Skilled with precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.)
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and continuous improvement
 

Preferred Experience

  • Industrial manufacturing experience, ideally in pulp and paper
  • CNC programming skills
  • Experience working on large-scale industrial equipment overhauls
